The past 2-3 weeks I've literally been editing from when I wake up to when I go to sleep. And last night I skipped the sleep part... But finally I'm about to finish the hardest stage of editing, as I'm only about 5 script pages away from finishing my rough cut!
Each screenplay page is supposed to equal about a minute on screen, but the movie is about 12 minutes longer than it's page count. I'll need to go in and cut the fat from the movie, right now it'll end up being near 2 hours long! I'm aiming for a 1hr40min movie. I'm going to finish the rough cut tonight, and watch the movie all the way through. Then tomorrow I'll start cutting out the unnessecary stuff, and hopefully start working on sound design.
Chris and Ellis have been going out and getting very thorough sound effects and ambiance for the sound design of the movie which is going to make it sound excellent. This upcoming week we'll also be meeting with Chris Cosby and starting work on the score for the movie, which is very exciting but also very scary because we only have about a week to get the whole score recorded!

Brief update
Current status -
I've got 75 minutes of the rough cut so far and it's looking damn good. Trying to get the movie in at 100 minutes, but it looks like my rough cut will be 10 minutes too long. Gonna have to go back and snip it closer to the ears, then time for some seriously intensive sound design work....
Here's a frame from the scene I'm working on right now...
Unfortunately it looks like I may not have time to cut a trailer until I get back to school! I'm extremely excited to edit a trailer and put it out there for everyone, but I'm not going to do it until the actual movie is spick and span...

Editing Editing Editing
Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I took a few days off after we finished filming and then began editing the movie on July 5th. It's been a really different editing experience this time around, as there are just so many more options in the edit and so many more decisions that must be made.
In a short film, in editing I usually treat the movie as a few scenes (or even just one), so it's easy to choose a rhythm and mood and stick with it. But with this movie, everything has to work dramatically on the small level of the individual scene, but it also has to create a consistent, coherent, and dramatic whole 100 minute movie. There are so many factors in every scene that have to be considered in timing the cuts and determining what is seen and what is only heard (or what is cut entirely).
In the beginning it was difficult because the first scene was especially challenging to edit. It was our most rushed scene when we were shooting and there were a couple of continuity mistakes that I saw right as I began editing it that I was very worried about. Luckily, through a little creativity I was able to edit around them and now they aren't an issue and the scene looks great! Since then there haven't been any major problems and the movie has been looking really good.
Right now I am editing a 1st cut of the entire movie, which will be watchable, but the audio will still need a ton of work. We're going to have to go out and get sounds for ambiance, sound effects, foley, and a few voiceovers. We're going to put a lot of work into the sound design of the movie and try to make it sparkle. I think weak sound design is the first giveaway of a cheap amateur movie, we won't fall into that pile. Sound design (which is made up of all the sounds you hear in a movie except for the music and dialogue) is actually going to play a big role in this movie dramatically, because we won't be using much music. Instead we'll be relying on sounds to enhance the mood of many of the scenes.
I have over 30 minutes of the movie editing so far in my 1st cut, but it's taking longer than I thought it would. So far I've been averaging about 5 hours of editing a day, but if I'm going to finish this movie before summer is over, I'm going to have to put the pedal to the metal. Starting tomorrow I'm going to edit from 9-5 everyday and see how that works out. My goal is to finish this 1st cut on July 21st. That should give me time to edit a trailer before summer is over, and at the same time work on the audio for the 2nd cut of the movie.
So hopefully I will have a trailer edited and online in 2.5-3 weeks, but if time is running out, that will be the first thing I put on hold. I'd much rather have the movie finished before I left than just the trailer. There's much more to say but I need some time to sleep...and edit...until I create a clone of myself that can edit while I sleep...
